Konawaena planning centennial celebration
Konawaena High School is reaching out to all alumni to join the school’s 100-year celebration committee.
The school marks 100 years in October 2021 and the committee hopes to make the celebration a success.
The next meeting is 6 p.m. Thursday in the high school library. All are welcome.

Civic association
offers scholarship
The Kona Japanese Civic Association will award two $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors in West Hawaii with financial needs who will be attending an accredited two- or four-year college or university. Home-schooled seniors and students of any ethnic background are invited to apply.
The applicants will be judged on a 600-word essay based on their awareness of and how the Japanese culture influenced them, as well as financial need, academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular high school activities and volunteer with community organizations.
Applications must be postmarked by March 23 and are available from high school counselors or online at www.konajapanesecivicassociation.org.

Select public charter schools accepting free Pre-K applications
Applications are being accepted for preschool classes at select charter schools on Hawaii Island for the 2020-21 school year.
The goal of the pre-kindergarten program is to build a child’s existing skills and strengthen a family’s ability to support their child’s learning.
The free pre-K program is for 4-year-old children who are born between Aug. 1, 2015, and July 31, 2016.
Selection preference is given to children of families with income at or below 300% if the federal poverty level; children receiving special education services; homeless children; foster care children; and children whose second language is English. Thereafter, all 4-year-old children will be considered, based upon space availability.
Participating Hawaii Island schools include: Ka Umeke Kaeo Immersion PCS in Keaukaha; Ke Kula o Nawahiokalaniopuu Iki Lab PCS in Keaau and Waimea; Kua o ka La New Century PCS in Pahoa; Laupahoehoe Community PCS; Na Wai Ola PCS in Mountain View and Volcano School of Arts &Sciences.
