It’s been quite a tumultuous past few weeks amid the evolving COVID-19 pandemic wrecking havoc across the world and our local Big Island communities — bringing our day-to-day way of life to a screeching halt.
For the first time, I felt a loss for words in writing my weekly column. Self isolation, social distancing and shelter-in-place replaced any formal or informal gatherings, and giving someone the thumbs up or throwing out a distant “shaka” replaced the close greetings of hugs, high-fives and hand shakes.
Then the mass layoffs began followed by extended school closures and then the slew of emails notifications of upcoming event cancellations. Yes I admit, it made me feel a bit unnerved.
Typically writing my weekly columns would be something I would look forward to each week. Race recaps, athlete profiles, upcoming races and event previews — you name it, I love it. And suddenly, with all sporting events coming to a halt, there was nothing to write about.
So this week I decided to write on what has helped me get through this time of uncertainty, and what has become an emotional and financial roller coaster. I have learned that the key is finding some kind of balance on what I can control. For me, it’s finding ways to exercise on my own.
Whether it’s getting out for a solo run, walk or jog, riding a bike on an indoor trainer, or finding alternate ways to exercise at home, being active has helped me to keep a positive outlook on life.
No one knows when we will resume what we consider “normal life,” or when our local sports community will get going again. Until then, try to find ways to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by being active through exercise. Like me, it may help you find a better balance in your day-to-day life.
