Coffee for Veterans resumes this week
The weekly free Coffee for Veterans is back starting this Wednesday. All veterans are invited to come “talk story” with their fellow veterans at Umekes Fish Market Bar and Grill at the corner of Kaiwi Street and Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona.
Coffee for Veterans gets underway a 9 a.m. Breakfast will be available for $7 per person. Face masks are required.

Applications for free, reduced-price school meals to be sent home with pupils
Application forms for free and reduced-price school meals for children unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program for School Year (SY) 2020-21 will be sent home with students in their first day of school packets. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to their child’s school.
The information provided on the application will be used only for purposes of determining eligibility, may be verified at any time during the school year by the school or other program officials, and will be kept confidential.
After verification, households will be notified of their child(ren)’s eligibility for free meals.
If the students are members of households receiving assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), no application is required for free meal benefits. All children in these households are eligible for free meal benefits.

UH-Hilo announces new vice chancellor
University of Hawaii at Hilo Chancellor Bonnie D. Irwin recently announced the selection of Kristen Roney as the university’s new permanent vice chancellor for academic affairs following Thursday’s virtual meeting of the UH Board of Regents.
Roney’s appointment is effective Aug. 17. She succeeds Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ken Hon, who has been in the position since 2017.
Roney is currently Associate vice president for academic programs and founding dean at California State University — Monterey Bay, a position she has held since 2014. Prior, she served in other administrative and faculty positions at the University of North Georgia from 2003 to 2014.
She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Norfolk State University, and her master’s degree and doctorate in comparative literature from University of Georgia.
