Kulani Correctional Facility reports no COVID-19 cases

All 164 inmates tested this week at Kulani Correctional Facility have received negative results, the state Department of Public Safety announced Thursday afternoon.

The final 86 results came back negative Thursday and 78 results came back negative Wednesday, according to the department. The Kulani Correctional Facility to date has seen just one COVID-19 case, which was announced Sept. 11 among a staff member who’d last worked at the correctional center on Sept. 6.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with my staff for the amazing job they are doing executing the pandemic plan daily, to keep our inmate population free of COVID. I commend all of my security, medical and civilian staff for their hard work and effort, and the team who coordinated the testing for the smooth implementation and quick completion of the testing plan,” KCF Warden Wanda Craig said in a prepared statement.

At Hawaii Community Correctional Center, one inmate remains listed as “active” after testing positive for COVID-19. No additional cases have cropped at the facility after the department announced the positive test result on Sunday.

The department is conducting mass-testing at its facilities across the state after an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Oahu Community Correctional Center sickened more than 400 inmates and staff. No new cases were reported Thursday and 366 have since recovered.

The order of facilities next in line for mass-testing is still being worked out, according to the department.
