Antonia Avelino


Antonia Freitas Avelino, 88, of Hilo, died Sept. 11, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Holualoa, she was a homemaker.

Private services held.

She is survived by children, Alfredo (Danelle) Avelino Jr. of Pahoa, Gloria (Javier) Irizarry of Selma, Texas, Lorena Reyes of Tamuning, Guam, Richard (Raynell) Avelino Sr. of Monroe, Washington, and Anita Lynn (John) Ramos of Pahoa; sisters, Marion Manuel of Naalehu, Violet Vasconcellos of Aiea, Oahu, and Carol Shamburger of Kona; 65 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

George Fujiwara

George “Bull” Tamotsu Fujiwara, 92, of Hilo and formerly of Aiea, Oahu, died Sept. 17, 2020 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Ola’a, he was a retired Pearl Harbor Post Office postal clerk, volunteer worker at Hawaii Hybrids and U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Private services were held. Inurnment at a later date at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Family requests no monetary gifts or koden.

He is survived by wife, Yaeko Fujiwara of Hilo; sons, Duane (Phyllis) Fujiwara and Myles (Yonghui) Fujiwara of Aiea, Oahu; daughter, Lorene (Gerrit) Takasaki of Hakalau; sister, Frances Tanaka of Hilo; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Naoto Katada

Naoto Katada, 94, of Hilo, died Sept. 20, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 12, 1926, in Hilo, he was retired from the former Hawaii Transportation &Terminal (H.T. &T.) as a bulk sugar superintendent and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers or monetary gifts or koden.


He is survived by wife, Emiko Katada of Hilo; son, Jon (Joy) Katada of Hilo; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
