A 28-year-old Hilo man is facing charges for allegedly shoplifting items from three stores in Hilo last month.

Bryan Kaipo Piilani was arrested Saturday in Hilo and charged Sunday with two counts of first-degree theft during an emergency period, and fourth-degree theft, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $51,000.

The charges stem from three separate shoplifting incidents last month during which Piilani entered a retail establishment and removed various items without paying for them, police said. On Feb. 22, Piilani allegedly removed approximately $160 worth of items from a surplus store on Mamo Street. The following day, police alleged he removed approximately $379 worth of items from a convenience store on Kinoole Street. On Feb. 25, Piilani allegedly removed approximately $365 worth of items from a convenience store on West Kawailani Street.

In all three incidents, Piilani was observed on the store’s video surveillance cameras, police said.
