Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for suspected drunken driving March 29 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Kona officers arrested 15 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested eight and South Kohala officers four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna arrested two motorists.
So far this year, there have been 331 DUI arrests compared with 266 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 198 major accidents so far this year compared with 423 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, seven fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, seven people had also died.
