Hiker rescued in Kalapana Gardens

A woman was rescued Tuesday afternoon after apparently failing to return from a hike in Pahoa.

Responding to the 2:07 p.m. alarm of an overdue hiker, Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to Piilani Road in the Kalapana Gardens subdivision of Pahoa.

Upon arrival, units began searching the area, locating the victim walking in a lava field about an hour after they arrived.

The woman reportedly told Hawaii Police Department officers she was confused and was not sure what had happened. She was taken by medics to Hilo Medical Center for further evaluation.
