Maureen Niimi

Maureen Sumie Niimi, 67, of Hilo, died April 10, 2021, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Hilo, she was retired from HMSA and was a paraprofessional tutor at E.B. de Silva Elementary School.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary gifts.)

She is survived by brother, Jeffrey Kondo, of Oahu; sister, Pauline Kondo, of Hilo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Francis Garifo

Francis Anthony Garifo, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died April 15, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital. Born June 12, 1940, in New York, he was a sales representative for PING, and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Services held.

He is survived by wife, Mary Garifo of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Paula (Bryan) Knight of Kailua-Kona, and Roxanne (Diane Tell) Garifo-Tell; son, Gregory (Greg Grantham) Garifo; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, all of Arizona.

Henry Meyer Jr.

Henry “Sonny” “Cowboy” Meyer Jr., 90, of Kapulena, died April 15, 2021, at his residence. Born in Pa’auilo, he was a plumber and carpenter for Hamakua Sugar Co., member of the Kona Seniors Bowling League and a Hawaii Army National Guard veteran.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. May 15 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa for a 10 a.m. Mass.

He is survived by daughters, Janice (Orson) Wilcox of Honokaa and Kathy (Kimo) Stone of Waimea; son, Gordon (Leonette) Meyer of Honokaa; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ann Cooke

Ann Houseworth Cooke, 92, of Hawi, died May 1, 2021, at her residence. Born Jan. 30, 1929, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, she was a retired elementary teacher.

Services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by son, Jeff (Janet) Cooke of Hawi; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Herbert Hirata

Herbert T. Hirata, of San Angelo, Texas, died April 25, 2021, at Shannon Memorial Hospital in San Angelo, Texas. Born in Kealakekua, he was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War veteran, carpenter, pecan farmer in Texas, a Supreme Master Gem Cutter, published author, and supporter of Wounded Warriors of America, food banks and animal rescues.

Services held in Texas.

He is survived by sister, Elaine (George) Harai; daughter, Teresa (George); two nieces; a nephew; great-nieces and nephews; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

George Acia III

George Francis Acia III, 64, of Waimea, died May 7, 2020. Born in California, he was a tile setter and fisherman.

Friends may call at 11 am. May at Alae Cemetery for a service. Celebration of life to follow from 1 to 7 p.m. at Onekahakaha Beach pavilions 6 and 7.

He is survived by wife, Alita Acia; sons, Gary Gouveia, Joshua Acia, Kaleo Navas-Clark, Hunter Acia, and Jordan Acia; daughters, Angela Gouveia-Trimm, Christina Acia, Wendy Navas, Kristy Acia, and Jenna Acia; brothers, Dominic Acia, Paul Rodrigues and Peter Rodrigues; sisters, Georgeann Fleming’s, Louise Perez, Christina Acia, and Beatrice Daijogo; 13 grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lawrence Souza

Lawrence Souza, 93, of Kaiwiki, died April 12, 2021, in Papaaloa. Born in Kaiwiki, he was a retired carpenter and farmer, U.S. Army veteran and member of the Carpenters Union Local 745.

He is survived by sister, Mary Souza; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jacqueline Stradtmann-Carvalho

Jacqueline Regan Stradtmann-Carvalho, 60, of Volcano, died April 21, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was an assistant professor of mathematics at Hawaii Community College.
