$15K grant help save more pet lives on Hawaii Island

The Hawaii Island Humane Society is the recipient of a $15,000 grant investment from the newly named, Petco Love, to support the nonprofit’s lifesaving work for animals on Hawaii Island.

Petco Love is a nonprofit leading change for pets nationally by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, the organization has empowered nonprofits with $300 million invested to date in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And, they’ve helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations, like the Hawaii Island Humane Society, nationwide.

“Providing compassionate care for animals in need is at the heart of what we do at the Hawaii Island Humane Society. All of this is made possible through grant investments from organizations including Petco Love and community support from donors with a passion for our mission,” said Lauren Nickerson, Chief Operating Officer of Hawaii Island Humane Society.

Hawaii Island Humane Society is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote respect for all animals, prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and animals. Since 1965, Hawaii Island Humane Society has promoted spay/neuter as a vehicle to eliminate pet overpopulation and has continued outreach island wide at its two shelters in Keaau and at the Animal Community Center in Kona.

The Hawaii Island Humane Society utilizes its Mobile Spay &Neuter ‘Waggin to increase the number of appointments and expand its reach into the rural communities on island. Its innovative fostering programs increase lifesaving efforts by allowing more space in the shelters and additional room to hold incoming animals.
