Old Saddle Road remained closed Sunday as firefighters battled a 2,000-acre brush fire that broke out Saturday in South Kohala.
The fire, which broke out Saturday afternoon in the Keamuku Maneuver Area, had scorched more than 2,000 acres as of mid-day Sunday, according to the U.S. Army. State, county and federal assets were working to douse the flames, and protect the Kilohana Girl Scout camp off the Old Saddle Road.
The fire, which burned between Old Saddle Road and Daniel K. Inouye Highway, was still not contained as of press-time Sunday.
Approximately 50 personnel worked overnight Saturday into Sunday amid strong winds to prevent the fire from destroying structures and Palila Critical Habitat, according to the U.S. Army.
