The Young at Art exhibition is back at the East Hawaii Cultural Center with a special display in Kalakaua Park.
For the 34th year, Young at Art offers keiki across the island, from kindergarten to 12th grade, a chance to submit artwork for the juried exhibition.
Nearly 200 paintings, drawings and sculptures will be on display at EHCC and in satellite locations beginning Saturday. Prizes and awards will be awarded for the best submissions in several categories.
Students were invited to reflect on settings and spaces that help shape who they are for this year’s theme of “Place: Spaces That Shape Us.”
The artists were urged to explore their emotional connections to locations, real or imaginary.
The exhibit will also be displayed at satellite exhibitions at the Hilo Public Library and Mokupapapa Discovery Center.
Patrons can also see an installation in Kalakaua Park that features pinwheels and windmills, made almost entirely from recycled material, that were created by youth participating in the Youth Art Series, a program of free Saturday art activities on the EHCC lanai.
After School All Stars and the Hawaii Science and Technology Museum helped children to assemble the windmills from recycled plastic bottles.
The windmills are now installed on beams above the Kalakaua Park walkway.
Wind-spinners grace the banks of the pond, and were designed by keiki at EHCC, along with the Hilo High School Art Club, assisted by local woodworker Jerry Moulton.
The YAA exhibits and the Kalakaua Park display will be on view throughout the month of March beginning Saturday.
