Police: Excavators unearth grenade in Keaukaha

Police say that an excavation company uncovered what appeared to be an old, unexploded military-style hand grenade last week while digging a hole for a utility pole.

Officers responding to a 10:45 a.m. Friday call conducted an evacuation of the immediate area and contacted the Hawaii Police Department’s squad.

When the the bomb squad arrived, a partial road closure of the north bound lane Kanoelehua Avenue was implemented. Bomb squad technicians determined the hand grenade was safe to be moved for disposal and took it to a disposal range for destruction.

No other ordinance was located in the area. There were no injuries.

Police remind the public that those who discover explosives should leave them alone and immediately call police at 911 or the department’s nonemergency line at (808) 935-3311.
