Tatsuo Higashi
Tatsuo “Baldy” Higashi, age 94, of Hilo, Hawaii, died February 10, 2023 at his residence in Hilo. He was born in Keokea, Kona, on Sept. 18, 1928 and was a founding member and Vice-President of Sales at Big Island Toyota in Hilo. He was a member of Hawaii Taishin Kyokai and AJA Bowling Club. Visitation will be held at New Hope Hilo (840 Kupulau Road) on March 11, 2023 (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Celebration of Life service will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is requested. He is survived by daughter, Joyce Higashi Ikeda of Hilo; sons, Noren (Pam) Higashi of Hilo, Irvin (Donna) Higashi of Honolulu, Grant Higashi of Hilo and Derek (Elaine) Higashi of Kailua-Kona, 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Doris Sugimoto
Doris “Toyan” Toshiko Sugimoto, age 98, of Hilo, Hawaii, died Jan. 22, 2023 in the Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Hakalau, Hawaii on Dec. 31, 1924 and was employed by the State of Hawaii at Keaau Elementary School. She was a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin. Visitation will be held at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo on March 12, 2023 (Sunday) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire and wearing of face-masks required. Judy Moa,
Judy Mapuana Moa, 61, of Captain Cook, Hawaii died Feb. 2, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Seattle, Washington on October 9, 1961, she was a self-employed property insurance broker and owner of Moa Insurance Services Hawaii. A celebration of life will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 5, 2023 at Old A’s Makaeo Pavilion in Kailua Kona. She is survived by her daughters, Quinn Goethals of Kailua Kona and Caylen (Brent) Gapusan of Hilo; son, Trey Pono Kauliakamoa-Cabuag of Kailua Kona; 2 grandchildren. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.
Moises Cumlat
Moises D. Cumlat, 89, of Pepeekeo, passed away on Feb. 24, 2023 at Hilo Medical Cente. Born on March 15, 1933, in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines; he was a Planting Machine Crewmen for the former Mauna Kea Sugar Plantation Company. He also was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou. Gladys Arase
Gladys Minoe Arase, 91, of Honalo, passed away on Jan. 26, 2023 at home. She was born on Sept. 24, 1931, in Hofu-shi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Gladys worked as a seamstress. She is survived by sons Randy, Alvin, Danny (Debra L.), Wayne (Reinette), Frank (Karilynn); granddaughter Alysha; grandson Danny Jr.; Hanai daughter Faye I., Hanai granddaughter Adelle I. Toshiyuki Nakao
Toshiyuki Nakao, 86, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii died Jan. 20, 2023 at his residence. Born in Ookala on June 10, 1936, he was a food waiter at the former Kona Inn Hotel. He was a delivery driver for Honaunau Market and Blondie’s. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. March 11, 2023 at Helani Congregational Church in Kahaluu Mauka at 78-6551 Mamalahoa Hwy.
