Runnin’ with Rani: Women take center stage at Hearts and Trails running event

PUUANAHULU — The Hearts and Trails off-road running events held Sunday, Feb. 25 at the beautiful Makani Golf Club surpassed all expectations as Janet-Higa Miller and her team once again delivered on a fun trail event that resonated with women of all ages and fitness levels.

Hosted by Aloha Sports Kona, in collaboration with their nonprofit arm, Aloha Tri Sports, the women-only event offered participants two exciting race distances: a 3-mile trail race and a more challenging 5-mile trek. Notably, a portion of the entry fees benefited the Puuwaawaa Dry Forest Reserve via charity partner, Ka Ahahui O Ka Nahelehele.

As most of Kona endured passing rain showers, participants were blessed with sunny skies and eagerly embraced the opportunity to immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery surrounding the Makani Golf Club. Whether participants were seasoned athletes or first-time racers, each found themselves swept up in a shared passion for fitness and camaraderie.

The 3-mile race saw fierce competition as athletes navigated winding single-track trails and undulating terrain. Every step challenged their strength and endurance, with each participant pushing herself to new limits.

Cheers erupted at the finish line as Holualoa’s Laura Ankrum crossed as the women’s 3-mile winner with her swift time of 20 minutes and 39 seconds. Kailua-Kona’s Lynette Noble was next with her time of 25:50, followed by Hilo’s Adelyne Demetrion in third at 26:28.

Meanwhile, the 5-mile event proved to be a true test of grit with runners conquering steep inclines and rugged paths. Despite the physical demands, Anna Dalton from Anchorage, Alaska, claimed her first Hearts and Trails title with her time of 34:46. Defending champion Bree Wee of Kailua-Kona was next in a time of 40:08, followed by Kamuela’s Tiffany Ravaglia, who rounded out the women’s top three in 40:35.
