County issues water restriction notice
for South Kohala
The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply has issued a water restriction notice for customers in South Kohala from Waimea down to the Kawaihae area. Customers are required to reduce their water consumption by 25 percent, according to the department. The restriction was prompted by continuing dry weather conditions.
The Kawaihae Village subdivision, Waimea Airport, Lalamilo Farm Lots and Puukapu-Honokaia-Neinei areas are not included in the restriction, according to the department.
All agricultural users should keep water usage to a minimum and irrigate only at night between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to reduce water loss because of evaporation as well as to reduce water system drain during peak hours, according to the department.
To conserve water the department suggests the following, in addition to using the resource wisely:
• Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes
• Check for leaking faucets and pipes
• Serve drinking water only when requested
• Keep drinking water in the refrigerator
• Do not let faucets run unnecessarily
• When bathing, use water only to wet and rinse off
• Do not fill up the bath
• Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing teeth
• Flush toilets only when necessary
• Do not water lawns, wash cars or boats or use water to control dust

A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 25 to 33 knots, or 29 to 38 mph, and/or seas are expected to be 10 feet or greater and expected to produce conditions hazardous to small craft, according to the service.
