HONOLULU — Hawaii lawmakers are wrapping up the final day of the 2014 legislative session.
A major decision still remains on a historic land preservation deal on Oahu’s North Shore. House members have not yet approved $40 million in bonds to fund the deal brokered in part by Gov. Neil Abercrombie. The proposal, approved by the Senate, would preserve about 660 acres of land at Turtle Bay Resort.
As the House session began, the smell of flowers wafted through the chamber from the many leis the lawmakers wore. Rep. Kaniela Ing strummed a ukulele as he walked to his seat, celebrating the musical marvel that did not become the state instrument.
Lawmakers thanked their staffs and shook hands in congratulations for the bills that passed, including a proposal to make kindergarten mandatory.
