Teens encouraged
to paddle in Kona
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Kona Community Policing Section in collaboration with the Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) is teaming up with Kai’ Opua Canoe Club and Kai ‘Ehitu Canoe Club for the second annual HI-PAL Outrigger Canoe Regatta on Saturday, March 30 at Kailua Pier in Kailua-Kona.
Check-in will be at 7 a.m., with the opening ceremony at 9 a.m., and the races starting shortly thereafter. Lunch and an award ceremony will follow the last race.
Kids age 12 to 18 and clubs are welcome to participate in the HI-PAL regatta, which will feature 14 events. It’s a fun and exciting opportunity for kids to paddle with their club teammates, high school teammates, or their friends that may paddle for a different club or high school.
“Our first-ever canoe regatta last year was wildly successful and we are looking forward to all the different teams compete again this year,” Kona Communing Policing Officer Warren Leonard said.

BIIF water
polo begins
The season’s first BIIF girls water polo matches were held Saturday at Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i.
Hawaii Preparatory Academy played two matches, routing Hilo High 20-7 before falling 6-5 to KS-Hawai‘i.
Maile Imonen notched a whopping eight goals against the Vikings for Ka Makani, leading the way for her team. Ione Chicoine also had a big game, scoring six goals for HPA — trailed by teammate Martina Guerrabovea with four goals.
Terangi Moleni led Hilo with three goals, followed by Marisa Oishi and Lori Henline with two apiece.
Oililiu Wise led KSH over HPA with four goals. Imonen accounted for three of Ka Makani’s five goals.
The next set of BIIF girls water polo matches will take place this coming weekend at Hilo High.
Ka‘u seeking coaches
Ka‘u High School’s athletic department is extending its application deadline for its head and assistant football coaching positions.
Deadline for applications is Thursday, March 28 at noon. Applications can be picked up at the Ka‘u High &Pahala Elementary School office.
Completed applications can be dropped off at the school office or at the athletic director’s office.

Paralympics organizers bar Russians and Belarusians from opening and closing ceremonies
BONN, Germany (AP) — Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred Wednesday from marching in this year’s Paralympics opening ceremony in Paris, even if they are approved to compete as neutrals.
The International Paralympic Committee set limits on athletes from the two countries which are stricter than those detailed by the International Olympic Committee for the Paris Games that open one month earlier. The IOC in December decided against a blanket ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes over the invasion of Ukraine.
“As the athletes will participate in an individual and neutral capacity, they will not march in the Opening Ceremony on Aug. 28 or have a flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony on Sept. 8” the IPC said.
Travis, Jason Kelce attend bobblehead giveaway, cheer on Cavaliers to win over Celtics
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Kelce brothers showed up for their own giveaway, cheered on the Cavs and chugged beers.
No, Taylor Swift wasn’t with them.
Cleveland-born Travis and Jason Kelce were both in attendance Tuesday night as the Cavaliers paid tribute to the NFL stars with a souvenir bobblehead depicting them in Cavs jerseys and holding basketballs.
The Kelces were treated to a memorable performance by the Cavs, who rallied from 22 points down in the fourth quarter to stun the Boston Celtics 105-104 and end the NBA’s longest winning streak this season at 11 games.
“We had a blast,” Jason Kelce said.
