State 4-H honors Big Island residents
Catherine Chow, Sara Kimura, Jaymie Kunitomo, Ka’i Kunitomo, Jana Masunaga, Taylie Oshiro, Jamie Saito, Shayla Sayphone, Leiana Andrade-Stout, Caileen Teramoto and chaperones Joan Chong and Lisa Taniguchi from Hawaii Island joined 13 other outstanding 4-Hers and two other chaperones from Maui at the 98th National 4-H congress in Atlanta, Georgia, Nov. 23-27.
This is the highest state honor attainable by a 4-Her in recognition of significant accomplishments in the Hawaii 4-H Youth Development Program.
The conference theme “Be True, Be You” brought more than 850 outstanding 4-Hers together throughout the country. The 4-Hers were challenged by motivational speakers, hands-on workshops, cultural programs and community service experiences. The 4-Hers had an opportunity to expand and further develop their leadership skills.
Walmart donates 1.4 million
pounds of food
Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have donated more than 1,428,000 pounds of food to local Hawaii food pantries and nonprofits helping fight hunger during fiscal year 2018. The food donations and hunger relief support are part of Walmart’s overall $2.8 million in cash and in-kind contributions to Hawaii nonprofits during FY18 to support communities where it operates. In Hawaii, Walmart’s contributions during FY18 include:
• 1,428,886 pounds of food donated, which is the equivalent of 1,190,000 meals
• More than 1,000 hours of local volunteer services performed by local Walmart associates
• Hunger donations in Hawaii are one piece of the $2.8 million in total cash and in-kind contributions to local Hawaii nonprofits.
KBIG’s toy drive
puts smiles on families’ faces
KBIG 106.1 / 97.9 radio station’s toy drive put smiles on many families’ faces this holiday season. Drop off centers collected the toys islandwide from Home World Slumber World, HPM Building Supply, Club Rehab, Bob’s Jewelers, and Kamaaina Motors.
Neighborhood Place of Kona (NPK) was one agency that received a car-load of toys. KBIG’s support brought hope to NPK families.
